Bunhill Fields – building leaf composting bins
To improve sustainability and provide an enhanced habitat for insects, we have built three leaf composting bins in Bunhill Fields. The first was constructed on March 2015 and the leaves were already sufficiently composted to use them as a mulch in the autumn. Two further bins have been built so that all the leaves in ‘our’ section of the graveyard can now be composted rather than being taken to a digester in Battersea.
As an action for the Biodiversity Action Plan 2016 – 2020, all Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation in the City will eventually have leaf composting bins. They are quick and cheap to construct from posts and chickenwire and are almost invisible from a distance of a few metres.
