Open Garden Squares Weekend 13-14 June 2015
When we saw our first visitor clutching their copy of the Telegraph’s Guided Walk of City Gardens, written by FoCG volunteer, Marion Blair, at 9 am in Postman’s Park we realised that maybe we might be in for a busy day. FoCG volunteers ran a pop up cafĂ© and plant stall in Postman’s Park on the Saturday. We were joined by John Price, of Goldsmiths University, who was on hand to tell visitors about the Watts Memorial and Ann Perrin, a wonderful poet in residence. OGSW visitors are linked by a common love of plants and home-made cake – so we sent them on their way well supplied with both.
For safety reasons we had to restrict the number of visitors to the Barbican Station Pop up garden to a maximum of ten at a time. The tours for were fully booked weeks in advance but by positioning the guides on the public platform we were able to show off the Pop up to many more visitors.
From the station the next step for OGSW visitors was the Dunnett-designed Beech Gardens. Louisa Allen, the City Gardens Manager gave a talk on Saturday morning and volunteers were on hand to show people around.
Next stop was Fann Street wildlife garden and the Edible Golden baggers’ allotments.
